The children have their waiting area with lots of toys, books, bean bag chairs.

In preparing a child for his or her first visit, we ask that the family avoid using negative words like "shot," "needle," "pain," etc. We like to use the more positive dental nomenclature, especially with young patients. An example would be "Mr. Thirsty" — this is how we refer to the suction in front of small children to keep them at ease. Also, in preparing the child, let him or her know that the dentist is only going to count their teeth and show them how to brush properly. We appreciate the extra effort in helping to make the child's first visit a good experience.

In most instances, we ask that the parents remain seated in the reception area. This helps the doctor fully concentrate on the patient without any distractions. Also, the patient can concentrate on the doctor's explicit directions without any distractions.

In some instances, because of the age of the child, the parents are required to be directly in the room with the patient. We do our best to provide quality care for your child. Thank you for your understanding.

Education & Prevention

As a practice, we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health.
We strive to provide “dental health care” vs. “disease care”. That’s why we, at Fort Washington Dentistry will focus on thorough exams.

Checking the overall health of your teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams, and taking X-rays when necessary will provide the best treatment plans necessary to tailor your needs.  We believe routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride, greatly benefit the prevention of dental disease.

A review of your medical history is necessary to enable us to be informed of your overall health. New medications and any illnesses that may impact your dental health must be updated at the time of your visit.

"Physicians are taking a more holistic approach to their patients’ overall health," says Sally Cram, DDS, PC, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association. Also, "In one recent study, people with serious gum disease were 40% more likely to have a chronic condition on top of it." - WebMD

Your mouth produces Bacteria that will over time build up, and increase your chances for infections, and infection-related diseases. The resulting inflammation will travel through the entire body and will result in other disease-related inflictions. Those inflictions can include heart disease, gum disease, and diabetes-related gum disease (periodontitis). the resulting inflammation from poor oral health begins in the mouth and will travel throughout your body thus weakening the ability to control blood sugar.

"Gum disease and heart disease often go hand in hand. Up to 91% of patients with heart disease have periodontitis, compared to 66% of people with no heart disease. The two conditions have several risk factors in common, such as smoking, unhealthy diet, and excess weight.", - WebMD

We strongly recommend patients who are expecting have regular checkups to prevent and deter any inflammation-related gingivitis, commonly known as pregnancy gingivitis during a woman's natural increase in hormones.  There are also correlations between oral health and Osteoporosis. With preventative measures, routine examinations and dental cleanings, and the reduction and treatment of periodontal disease, pain will be reduced in the decrease of inflammation. Other conditions relating to inflammation include lung conditions.

Uncompromising Safety

Infection control in our office is also very important to us! To protect our patients and ourselves, we strictly maintain sterilization and cross-contamination processes using standards recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
